That sounds stupider than stupid if you ask me. That kind of idea is just like saying "We can't make anything better even if we try" so you don't have a reason to try. At least, that's what it sounds like. I don't know your world or its rules, obviously, but I can't help but think like that since I've got someone's "absolute" fate that I want to change.
