Character Notes: The following contains spoilers for Angel Beats! Track Zero and Angel Beats!
History: Yuri Nakamura is a teenager girl. The difference between her and other teenage girls though? She's already dead. Before she died, she had three younger siblings (two sisters and one brother) who were killed during a burglary attempt on their house while she was helpless to protect them, then killed herself. The burglars took Yuri out of the way after they couldn't find anything in the house and told her that she must know where the valuables are since she's the oldest and that they'd kill her siblings one by one every 10 minutes if she couldn't come up with anything. The searched the whole house as fast as she could even though she was sick, but she didn't know about anything. She found a vase and tried to bring it to them, tripped and broke it, and the burglars killed both of her sisters and her brother. The cops came just before they killed her.
That's when her story ends and the sequel to her life began. Instead of dying and going to either heaven or hell or wherever it is people are supposed to end up, in her world if you aren't content with your life and have regrets and are too young to have really been capable of learning whether you're a good person or a bad person, you land yourself in a limbo of sorts.
High school for all eternity, except only a rare number of students are real human beings and the rest are creations made to make it seem real. Yuri was stuck here, stuck remembering the hell she went through when she was alive until she found some way of accepting what had happened and becoming satisfied with herself. Except, when you become satisfied, when you become at peace with yourself enough to be reincarnated and everything that's you disappears except for your soul. The few humans who are there remember you, but you just disappear and no one ever knows what happens. Yuri didn't like this and began to blame "God" for forcing them through this sort of thing instead of simply letting them die.
After kicking her roommate out of the room (very literally), she held her own dormitory and began thinking of ways to lure God out. Her master plan? Kill all of the fake people to piss him off so he comes down to scold her. When he gets there? Kick his ass. She had every plan to go down in history books as the girl who beat up God. And who showed up to help her just in her time of... well, "need" wouldn't be the right word, but eventually Hideki Hinata showed up in limbo and she immediately recognized him as human-- after all, the real humans were the only ones that didn't seem overly (maybe even disturbingly) normal.
So how does she greet him? She follows him around until he climbs up on a roof to see the whole thing... and kicks him off. Nice way to teach a guy the rules of limbo school: You can't die if you're already dead. A few days later and he's all healed up, she proceeds to make fun of him to all hell and recruit him as her partner (though not in that way. I believe her exact words were "Like hell that would ever happen!" in the light novel). Naturally, she introduces him to the school-- those are the fake people, your fake roommate will creep you out, God sucks and we're going to kick his ass, food is free, and don't get too happy or you'll disappear.
Hinata gives her the nickname "Yurippe." Then another person appears with a gun and tries to take out the principal, only to get killed by the student council president, who turns out to not be all that she seems. Hinata and Yuri dub her "Angel" since she has mysterious powers but doesn't appear to actually be God. They repeat the threaten-the-principal scene to lure her out and Hinata gets killed, so Yurippe abandons the mission to put him somewhere to heal.
Later, when Yuri realizes that Hinata scared his roommate (who turned out to be human, incidentally) by exagerrating stories about her and promptly kills him. After which, he criticizes her for being too harsh and she breaks off their partnership for the time stating that she doesn't mind being alone if he has a problem with her.
Yuri left on her own to assault Angel herself, in the middle of the hall, screaming and yelling the whole time and threatening to kill Angel if she didn't answer. She was pulled off by a teacher and began screaming about how there was no way she could get any kind of guidance "from inhuman bastards" in an environment that "turns highly capable people abnormal and unreasonable." Meaning, she didn't used to be like this until she was forced into this horrible world where she has to relive her misgivings amongst things made up just to try to make her disappear. She was rescued from the teacher by Hinata with a punch to the teacher's jaw, then a hug for her. To which she promptly broke his nose as he told her that she wasn't going to be alone, because he could tell that she was lonely even if she said she could handle it. Yurippe started to take her rage out on him and basically beat him to a bleeding pulp until Angel interrupted and brought her to her senses.
After that, Yurippe and Hinata reconcile and Ooyama joins the group (after some talking to from Hinata). While they're discussing how they're going to rebel against God, the boy who had originally tried to kill the principal snuck up on them with ~another gun~ and got them to start digging a hole with the intent of burying Angel alive. They don't really like this, so when he dozes off they grab the gun, except he has another one, shoots at Yurippe, Hinata takes the hit, then Yurippe shoots at the guy and takes the opportunity to get everyone out of there and hidden in the nearby forest. At this point, Yurippe starts justifying herself even though neither Hinata or Ooyama had thought for a second it was the wrong thing to do. This is the first inkling of Yurippe's past coming back, as she obviously has an aversion to guns when she first begins to use them.
Once she recovers, she gets the brilliant idea to challenge this man to an official mano-e-mano duel with the guns whilst designating Angel as the judge. Until then, they've got to hide out in the forest with limited supplies. Yurippe is not the slightest bit worried about being alone in the forest in a school uniform with a tiny skirt in the dark with both Hinata, who has peeked at her panties before, and Ooyama, though to be fair Ooyama's as harmless as a really adorable fly.
Yurippe wins the duel, but only by interference from Angel and a lot of shouting about how Yuri won so that Angel couldn't argue with it. Yurippe was kind enough not to bury the man alive and they all went for tea at Angel's dorm and they find out this very violent guy's name is Chaa. Turns out Yurippe reminds him of his wife (the two dropped out and eloped together while still in high school) and Chaa joins the party! Another member in Yurippe'sharem slaves group!
Chaa then takes the three of them down into a cave and shows them how he got a gun-- using alchemy to turn clay into metal. He trained them, but Yurippe was the only one who managed to make a nail it after two hours of practice. After that, we learn that you can only make the small parts using memories from their previous life to connect the parts and rearrange the atoms in this world. Unfortunately, it takes about 170 hours for one person to make a single gun using this method. (Still, that's more guns than they had at all before.) Yurippe order Hinata to go get food and manages to make a pinwheel out of the clay while they wait before they head further into the cave to explore.
While they're exploring, a wild Noda appears! And seriously, this is the fastest recruitment ever, since despite Noda's initial attempt to kill them all (succeeding with Ooyama, but they put him back together so he could heal faster at least). Chaa catches him and Yuri says your idea's stupid, we're going to rebel against God, join us? Voila, Noda has joined the party! They continue heading on once Ooyama's back in the running to go fight whatever it was that Noda was after-- the "final boss," as Yurippe dubs it. Except then Noda runs off so Chaa and Ooyama go to find him and Yuri and Hinata find the final boss, a girl, and Yuri challenges her to a fight! Except, you know, this girl has swords. And kicks Hinata's ass on so many levels that he's literally missing limbs and Yurippe ends up retreating and physically dragging him away into hiding, talking about how she's a terrible leader because she failed to take care of him.
Sword-girl isn't far behind! Except this time, since the rest of the group returns, they manage to capture her and find out she's just a normal human being with ridiculous fighting skills. Except then she escapes and Noda ran off (and Chaa after him) again while Yuri and Hinata were playing with the pinwheel she made earlier, so they all run in different directions and end up finding weapons! Yurippe takes a Western broad sword and a Katana because she's apparently trained in twin-sword fighting as well! Hinata takes a spear and Ooyama gets a mace (though he only ends up killing himself with it on accident and is them dubbed the king of the flashlight). Though she and the mysterious girl don't fight-fight again, she and Hinata manage to stave her off long enough for the group to escape the caves despite multiple attack attempts. Of course, the girl followed them out and continued to attack them. They were defenseless at that point, having put down their weapons, and Angel came to save them because Angel comes whenever someone defenseless is being attacked, regardless of whether they're real or not.
Angel and the mysterious girl are fighting, so Yurippe, Hinata, and Ooyama use that opportunity to go search for Chaa and Noda. While they're getting ready to look, Yurippe decides that they're going to form a combat unit using anyone they run into who's willing to join them and follow under her command. Hinata and Ooyama know that she already decided it so don't even try to argue, because they know it's futile to argue against her. And thus the Shinda Sekai Sensen (SSS, translates roughly as "Afterlife Battlefront") was formed! When they find Chaa and Noda, Chaa asks if he can join but she tells him both he and Noda are already members whether they like it or not. After Noda recovers from being beat up by Chaa (because Noda runs away everytime he thinks Yurippe's flirting with someone else because Noda wants to be the main character and Yuri is obviously the female lead according to him.) Anyway, so Noda proclaims that he will from this point on be Yuri's sword.
They head back to Angel and the mysterious girl who are still fighting, so Yuri decides they'll help Angel and once the girl is taken down, they'll recruit her too. So naturally, they get Noda and Chaa to fight the girl with Angel, Ooyama goes to stay out of the way and give signals, then Yurippe doesn't tell Hinata why they're going up to the roof of a building until she informs him that it's time for him to jump off the roof and attack the girl from above. Hinata freaks and doesn't go when she says, so she kicks him off the side of the building. Since he's already falling down, he slashes at the girl for the win and takes her out.
Yurippe then interrogates and talks at (yes, at) the girl and then informs her that instead of fighting them, she will now be fighting as a part of the SSS to get revenge against God and she can use all the strength she wants. To everyone's surprise, the girl agrees, probably because of something Yurippe said off-screen earlier. The girl falls asleep without giving her name, still very injured from the battle, and Yurippe declares that they need a headquarters and they are going to take over the principal's office to that end and set traps for Angel in case she tries to kick them out. Instead of burying the principal alive or killing him though, they decide that they're going to give the principal some kind of seat in their organization because he's an NPC (the official term they begin using from this point on to describe non-humans) and that will satiate him (probably).
How does that work? In the words of Hinata, "Don't worry about it, where there's her will, there will be a way. Leave it to me." Obviously it works out somehow, but god knows what actually happened to the principal since he's not there.
SKIP AHEAD to a battle with Angel in which a new kid shows up-- right next to Yurippe and her sniper rifle. Yurippe says by the way you're dead, if you don't do anything you'll be erased-- then asks him to join the "Like Hell We're Dead Battlefront." Because she changed the name, because the first one was like admitting they were dead and ready to give up right? They've been changing it ever since. "Before Like Hell We're Dead Battlefront" it was "Don't Even Feel Alive Battlefront" but that was a joke so they changed it the next day. At any rate, she tells him to just accept things the way they are and fight, then proceeds to yell at him for being stupid and jokes about him dying. Thus the whole SSS, with a number of new members all with weapons now. The guy leaves without joining and Yuri screams at Hinata a bunch. Then they all fight Angel because that's what they do. Oh and take him to the nurse's office because the dumbass got himself killed without even figuring out what his name was first.
Now then, a meeting proceed about what to name the SSS now! A number of suggestions are given and Yurippe basically hits anyone who has a bad suggestion. Yurippe demands a new name for the SSS from Otonashi despite that he hasn't even joined. At this point we learn that if you disappear before getting everything sorted out, you might get reincarnated as a barnacle or a seaslug. Not that they have any idea if that's really how it works, but hey. Yurippe declares that that's what Buddhism says so that's what they're going by for now.
Current Goal established as: Take out Angel and take over the goddamn world to draw God out.
Otonashi joins now and Yurippe's password to get into the HQ is revealed: "No God, no Buddha, no Angels." By the way we finally learn mystery-sword-girl's name (It's Shiina). We also learn that Yurippe designed SSS uniforms so the SSS wears completely different uniforms from the rest of the school now because she said so.
Anyway, Yuri gives him the low-down on the world about the NPCs, disappearing, etc. Then tells him if he doesn't believe her go poke one of the girls up the ass and see what happens. He passes, then she leads him back to HQ (they went to the roof) and explains to the SSS that they'll be going through with Operation Tornado! Which is a goofy operation to steal all of the meal tickets from the NPCs. It succeeds with a battle against Angel, an epic band performance from Girls Dead Monster, and Yurippe leading everyone to turn these HUGE fans on to get all the meal tickets to fly into the sky. Not a bad plan.
The next day Yurippe leads everyone down into the "Guild." Remember that cave? It's now a giant guild of all the humans she found who now alchemize weapons out of clay for them. Except all the traps are still set because Angel apparently found the entrance! They decide to pursue Angel since the traps will only slow her down! A couple of Indiana Jones, Star Wars, The Mummy, and Charlie's Angels scenes later, Yuri and Otonashi are the only ones left in tact (everyone else was "sacrificed for the greater good" to get past the traps) and they take a break since Yuri's pretty down because she couldn't keep everyone else alive. Yuri tells Otonashi about her family being murdered and explains that that's why she really wants revenge on God-- taking everything away like that, then forcing her to continue on with those memories in the afterlife was too much for even God to do. Exactly how she died is never stated, but she clearly tells Otonashi that it wasn't suicide ("Are you an idiot? Who would continue fighting if they killed themselves?")
The two of them make it to the Guild after that and Chaa reappears! It turns out, the reason he wasn't with the SSS before is because he's the head of the guild since he's the best at breathing life into things that look like what they remember/alchemy. Yurippe gets the Guild to evacuate and blow up the entire factory since Angel's coming and they can't really fight her (though Yurippe does give a good shot while they're delaying). The Guild builds a canon and fires it at Angel, but since they can't really make thing they don't remember it blows up on them and Yurippe body slams one of the already-down Guild guys for being completely random and useless. Yuri leads the GUild to a new location just as everyone else recovers from their dying-like experiences and makes it back to the surface. Yurippe shows off her leader skills by actually organizing this whole thing so that it goes smoothly.
Next Operation? Sneak into Angel's room and peak at her files. Girls Dead Monster puts on another concert as a diversion and against all orders, the lead singer plays a ballad she wrote herself because that's what she wants to sing and becomes satisfied with herself. She disappears while Yurippe discovers that Angel has been developing her own weapons, not getting them from God which poses a serious problem-- if Angel isn't actually bestowed with gifts from God, then how do they reach God?
Nevermind that for now though, Yurippe decides that everyone is going to participate in the school's baseball tournament and anyone who does worse than the NPCs will suffer a fate worse than death by her hands. Naturally, everyone participates given that "Those subject to Yurippe's punishent games are known to be driven to madness or personality changes," according to her assistant. Unfortunately, Angel and the student council Vice President, Ayato Naoi, form a student council team to beat the hell out of them with the rest of the school's official baseball team. Everyone loses but since it was Angel's fault Yurippe decides to be nice and not make everyone go through hell and back again.
Yurippe's next brilliant plan comes around "exams" time. Yurippe is beginning to suspect that Angel might be human and if she really is, then interfering with her studying and forcing her to fail all of her tests would cause an emotional assault despite that he's normally very closed down. And if she isn't human? Well, reputation of the student council president just went down the drain. So Yurippe has someone distract the class at the endof each test. If they fail to distract, she uses a propulsion engine she installed in their chairs to launch them into the ceiling instead. Well, it's definitely distracting. While the distraction occurs, Angel's (now also known as Kanade Tachibana, since she does have a real name) test is replaced with a fake one with really stupid answers. The plan works and Angel is forced to resign as student council president, promoting Naoi to acting president. Yurippe launched another Operation Tornado, but Angel doesn't interfere this time around. She does head for the concert though, to buy a meal ticket for her favorite food to seek comfort in a tough time and Yurippe realizes that there's no way Angel i anything but human. What this means to Yurippe though is that they aren't any closer to finding God than they ever were.
Then something strange happens. Instead of the normal no-consequences, the entire SSS i sent to a reflection room for punishment. It turns out, Kanade (Angel) had been keeping them out of trouble this whole time. Yuri orders everyone to attend classes for now and do whatever they want instead of paying attention in class to test the new situation. Ayato Naoi shows up in person but they escape. After that, Yuri does some snooping of her own and watches Naoi beat the ever loving shit out of two NPCs for fun. Then Angel and Otonashi get captured for eating during the break and are sent to prison, so Yuri leads the SSS in a full-on attack to rescue them. Except that Ayato Naoi is definitely not an NPC and has no problems with using the NPCs as human shields in a fight, so basically everyone is getting massacred by him. Yurippe uses a walkie-talkie to inform Otonashi of the situation and tell him to get Angel out of there to save everyone from the complete bloodbath Yurippe was asking for their help with.
Yuri is captured by Naoi and pulled into a delusion formed by him designed to overwrite her memories so that she moves on and is reincarnated forcefully. Otonashi interrupts, thankfully, and some really gay stuff happens that ends with Ayato becoming a good guy just so he can be around Otonashi, then joins the SSS. Yurippe's like whatever sure and doesn't argue with it because more members and that means he'll stop coating the campus in their blood. Plus? His hypnotism is legit. So Yurippe decides to employ him to attempt to get Otonashi's memories to activate, since he can't remember them at all still. Otonashi has an angstfest and Yuri talks to him later, then they all go fishing, Kanade included because Yurippe OK'd it. Kanade manages to catch a seriously giant fish known as the "monster of the river" and while they're serving that, Yurippe goes off on her own for a while and gets her ass handed to her by Angel.
--Wait, Angel? But Kanade was with Otonashi the whole time! Well, it turns out there are clones of Angel and one of them was accidentally made while Kanade was on the offense (against the giant fish, but it still counts) and it's stuck in offense-mode. Kanade takes the clone out and ends up in the hospital herself while Yuri heads to Kanade's computer to take a look at what's going on. Turns out, the reverse ability had a glitch in it so Yuri entered a new command that should return the clone to Kanade when Kanade next activates any abilities. Except then Kanade gets captured by the clone and Yurippe tell everyone the next SSS Operation is a full-frontal assault on the Angel clone.
...Except they get down to the Guild where they found that the Angel clone was hiding, then there's two. Three. Four. Five. So on. The clones have been cloning themselves for a deadly Angel army! Since they can't beat them, naturally the solution is to sacrifice themselves one by one in overly dramatic scenes during which the remainder of the group screams their name dramatically with tears, then runs off to the next area! Except Naoi, because Naoi hypnotized Ooyama to sacrifice himself and everyone was like whatthefuckman. Yui, Otonashi, and Yurippe are the only ones left and manage to basically skate down a cliff on their shoes like they were snowboarding or something. Except Yui hits a pole, so it's just Otonashi and Yuri again. Yurippe is the last one to fight an Angel clone and tells Otonashi to go on ahead (because everyone knows he's totally got a thing for Kanade and Yuri's not actually as mean as she acts sometimes).
Yurippe proceeds to have a really badass fight with the Angel clone and is the only one to last more than two seconds against her, so Angel pulls out her new skill: Howling. It's basically a really loud sound that makes people pass out. Except, Yuri saw it on the computer when she was looking through Kanade's things and brought earplugs, so she uses the opportunity to stab the clone in the chest and afterward proceeds to tease the shit out of her for losing. Because Yuri is not a good sportsman. Yuri won and Otonashi got Kanade to activate her Harmonics skill to make a clone, which activates the programming that Yuri input into the clones' database and they all return to Kanade. ...Except, turns out they all have their own consciousness that's now going to be tearing Kanade apart! That was kind of an oversight.
Kanade ends up in a coma, successfully being the first person in the Afterlife to not recover quickly from damage. This sends Yurippe on a guilt trip of sorts and she doesn't remain her chipper self for the time being. She's already a lot more serious than he had been at the beginning of all this after realizing Kanade was human, but now her own programming had hospitalized Kanade. Otonashi tells her that there was no way that she could have known that the clones would clone themselves enough to force this to happen in retaliation to the added program, but Yurippe leaves the room quietly after that to host a meeting of the SSS where they discuss what will happen to Kanade, since it's unlikely that she'll retain herself when she wakes up. "Just going by the ratio, the chances of her waking up as her old self are about 1%." according to Yurippe, suggesting there were at least 99 copies. Yuri is very serious throug hthis whole meeting and spends much of it just rocking her chair back and forth, out of both irritation and guilt.
Yurippe ends up sending a team of three members to look at the programming and see if they can find some way to seal all of Angel's powers in case the original Kanade isn't the dominant consciousness that comes out of the coma. This is the first point that Yurippe questions God's allegience instead of cursing him, which indicates a transition in her thoughts about him. "Who will God side with this time?" It's kind of surprising coming from her, since she had always designated God as an enemy before this.
Then Otonashi finally gets back the remainder of his memories and should be satisfied, but he doesn't disappear even after he tells Kanade about it (who woke up a while later with her personality in tact). He realizes this is because he wants to save everyone and there's no way that he can leave this place if people like Yurippe are still suffering with their memories and realizes that this whole place was created to let kids who suffered a miserable life live a normal one for a while. And Kanade's like duh that's why I was trying to help the whole time. Otonashi and Kanade decide to help everyone move on and get Kanade reinstated as the student council president by busting the SSS for framing her in order to distract Yurippe, who Otonashi says would be the one most object to this plan.
While they start work on fulfilling peoples' wishes to satisfy them, Yurippe ends up having to deal with a different problem-- weird shadows have started showing up and attacking members of the SSS with the intent to permanently destroy. Yurippe recognizes that this isn't linked to Angel, despite that she's supposedly started acting as their enemy again by becoming the student council president once more, and gives the orders that no SSS members are to travel in anything short of pairs for safety purposes. Regardless, Yurippe calls Kanade to the student council meeting room to interrogate her but Kanade doesn't know anything. Naoi, Hinata, and Otonashi (now all three working together to help people disappear) head over there as well because they're worried that they might get busted.
In the middle of the meeting, three of the SSS are surrounded by these shadows and Angel rushes in to save them, only very shortly followed by Yurippe. (They both jumped a few stories down a building to get there too.) Yurippe doesn't hesitate one bit to throw herself into the fray because the three people are in danger. Otonashi, Hinata, and Naoi follow shortly after. and it turns into a huge battle between the SSS+Kanade and the shadows. Yurippe sees one of the shadows being born and realizes that they're corrupted NPCs. At the end of the battle, with the SSS victorious, they learn that Takamatsu had been eaten by one of the shadows elsewhere and had completely disappeared. Until they see him the next day, in class, in the school's uniform instead of the SSS's uniform. He doesn't seem to remember anything and is acting like he's always gone to school like a regular student. He became an NPC after being eaten by that shadow because he stayed in the world for too long. Once eaten by the shadows, it becomes impossible to reincarnate because his soul was literally eaten and the physical appearance simply acts as an NPC now.
Everyone turns to Yurippe to help them and figure out what to do, obviously afraid that they'll become nothing at all. Yurippe calls a meeting to begin laying out the facts and flat-out states that she knows that some of the SSS members have begun operating under new ideals. She gives the floor to Otonashi after announcing that it's a viable alternative to being forced to fight the shadows. The group is somewhat split after this and some of the SSS members ask Yurippe what she's going to do.
"Me? I'm always doing my own thing. I won't be proteting you guys. I just do whatever I want!"
It becomes obvious that Yurippe isn't going to attempt to dissuade anyone from letting themselves be reincarnated. If they make that choice, then it's there's and she won't interfere, whether she agrees with it or not. Yurippe still pulls Otonashi, Naoi, Hinata, and Kanade aside to talk to them and to enlist Kanade's help protecting everyone while they try to get them to move on, since Yurippe and Kanade are the strongest fighters and stand the best chance of winning against the shadows. Yurippe also bursts their bubble that Kanade's not actually an angel, because apparently they're stupid enough to have still believed that the entire time. Yurippe announces that it's really important that Kanade fights though, because she's going to leave for a while to do something important and that if she comes back and everyone's gone, she's going to assume that they all were safely at peace because of Otonashi. Yurippe obviously has the intent of going off alone to find God, as she had initially planned.
Everyone, Hinata especially, expresses concern about her going off on her own and coming back to be alone and this surprises Yuri, but they're quickly interrupted by an attack. Yurippe starts gathering her own arsenal for her own trip after that. She didn't tell anyone that the NPCs were the ones turning into the shadows, but she realized that if the NPC's "data" could be rewritten like Kanade does to her weapons, then it's probably someone that's rewriting the NPC's programming with a ton of computers. She checks out the library's computer lab and catches some NPC installing new computers, since it seems like a lot of them get stolen. Once she finds the culprit? Whoever's taking those computers is the person who's acting as the "God" of this world.
Yuri reinvestigates the computer lab and finds a trap door which, instead of opening it like a normal person, she takes a machine gun to. When she looks down the trap door with a flashlight, she realizes that it leads straight to Guild's old location again! She heads down and shadows start attacking her on the way. A lot of them are up fighting those on the surface, but Yurippe has to deal with a mass number on her own. Low on bullets, it's only luck that she runs into Chaa, who gives her some fresh made ones. Chaa explains that since they're all aiming to move on, the Guild will too and he's glad that he was able to be useful just once more and disappears.
Once out of the mass of shadows, Yurippe sits down to take a break and begins to think about how she and Kanade could've been friends if she'd just tried to understand her sooner, since they've both been there the longest. She realizes it probably would've been impossible though, since it would be impossible for her to forgive God for what happened to her family and that would directly contradict what Kanade wanted for everyone. Then, the shadows catch up with her and she fights them off, but she's pulled into the hsadows-- she ends up being forced into an illusion of a normal school life as an NPC, only flashes of what happened permeating through the illusion. For a few moments, Yuri is tricked by it but she quickly realizes that this simple happiness of being able to just be a normal kid is something that she can't have because of her memories and personality. If she doesn't have those, then she's not really herself and she doesn't know if she can just let herself disappear like that. She only gets one life, even if it's that miserable one she's been struggling with and that's why she can't give up. The illusion floods with shadows and she's almost swallowed whole by them, but Kanade, Otonashi, Naoi, and Hinata save her, having apparently dealt with the menace upstairs enough to get away to come to rescue her (turning the tables for once).
After a bit of talk, Yurippe regains her composure and gets back to her usual determined self and goes up ahead of the others, who have now elected to help her. The four start to fight the shadows so that Yurippe can go on ahead, since defeating the God of this world is the one thing that will help her to pass on. Yuri makes it to the jokingly named "Second Computer Lab" to find a mysterious boy in the room, who explain that he's basically a program implemented by the creator of this program, who died long ago. That's right, this whole thing is manipulated by some kind of fucked up computer-based system and that's why everything can be altered. The only reason that it was altered, however, is because love manifested in the afterlife world, which is something that is not allowed because if love manifests itself this world can become an eternal paradise, which it is not intended to be. The person who created the computer program "Angel Player" wasn't the one who created the world, but he was the one who set the program to "reset" whenever someone fell in love (by attempting to delete all of the humans in the afterlife presently and turning them into NPCs).
The mysterious boy in charge of the Angel Player program explains to Yurippe that the programmer became an NPC himself because the person he fell in love with graduated from the school and he was waiting for her return but he was here for so long that he couldn't stay sane. He also tells Yurippe that she can actually become God if she wants to use her will to do so. After a brief moment of her looking like he's gone completely batshit with glee, she realizes that's not the reason she came this far and explains that she came all this way with one real purpose in mind: To protect everyone, like she couldn't do with her siblings. The Angel Player controller recognizes that she's the source of the love that was triggering the system and asks what she's going to do. She says she'll completely destroy the Angel Player program and goes Rambo on the entire lab, demolishing every single computer with a trace of the program in its system. Yurippe realizes that she's managed to save everyone and that she's fallen in love again with everyone in the SSS, even though she wanted to be the sister who only ever loved them. She passes out and the souls of her brother and sisters tell her that they're thankful for thinking of them for so long, but they're okay if she moves on now.
When Yurippe wakes up, she's in the hospital. Otonashi, Hinata, Kanade, and Naoi are all there with her, to her surprise. They explain that they couldn't move on if she wasn't with them so they waited for her. They realize that Yuri got over her troubles though, even though she refuses to admit it so Naoi says he'll just use his hypnosis to make her tell. Naturally she stands straight up and pierces the heavens with her yelling and sheet/pillow-throwing abuse. Turns out though, they're the only one's left in the whole afterlife. There's one last thing to do before they can all move on though: Kanade wants to graduate, since she never got to do that. The five of them hold a graduation ceremony. Before the ceremony starts, everyone notes that Yurippe seems to be acting like a normal girl finally instead of a psycho-violent leader of a rebel force. Hinata teases her about it so she beats him up though, so the behavior obviously isn't all gone.
They have the graduation ceremony, complete with school songs and certificates, and Naoi cries. Then one by one, they all disappear after saying their goodbyes.
Until the next life, right?
Personality: Yuri is extremely playful, brash, and dangerous. Since she knows that no one in limbo can die, she has no hesitation to injure or kill anyone if they upset her then joke about it later. If they were alive and could die, she would probably be considered cruel, but she really does care about keeping everyone together. Entirely outgoing and a little eccentric, Yuri doesn't hestitate to try even the most ridiculous of plans, even if some people refer to her personality as "terrifying" but refreshing, since it's so much better than staying with one of the false humans.
Why she's in limbo? She wasn't able to act as the older sister and save her younger siblings. Memories of the events of that day refuse to leave her and because she can't let go of her regrets, she isn't suited for reincarnation and is placed in the limbo school. Her need to be in power is likely a result from her inability to have control over her situation when she and her family were killed.
This is why she has something of a dictator-like mentality in terms of her leadership, since she's always in charge and tends to put her foot down on the others like they're fleas on a dog if they don't agree with her, but in an extremely free-spirited way. She's not mean necessarily, just... very zealous about her intentions. She always has to be in power, and even when she asks for the opinions of others she manages to make it into a part of her will by ordering them to make a plan to accomplish ________. She can be pretty manipulative in that respect, sometimes even putting everyone in compromising situations if she doesn't think they can win so that Angel will appear and take care of the problem for her.
Despite her various misgivings, she is warmly accepted as the leader of the SSS though she initially claimed she "[doesn't] mind being alone" to Hinata, who promptly broke her theory and clung to her like barnacles on a boat. She makes friends surprisingly quickly for her nature and has a tendency to drag them into playing sports with her. To exercise, she says, but in a world where you can't die or remain hurt how can you improve your muscles if your muscles won't stay torn enough to get bigger? Hinata notes that it's probably just stress relief and to do activities with other people, which is likely the case since she tends to never stop talking while they do things. There's also the possibility that she's been in limbo for a much longer time before she was introduced, given that she seems to have a number of skills beyond sports as well. Since she's only 17, it's likely that she spent the vast majority of her time in the school learning various fighting skills in order to compensate for not being able to protect her family when she was alive, ranging from archery to the twin-sword style and eventually proper use of guns. The same might also extend to sports, given her emphasis on needing to exercise before battles.
Sometimes she'll claim outrageous things in an attempt to cover up her true intentions, many times are basically just because she felt like it. Borrowing Angel's swimsuit? Clearly she has a chance of getting superpowers if she wears it. She'll also make fun of the guys for being perverted (whether they actually are or not), initially playing off of the fact that she's the only human female around, but later just doing it for fun.
A lot of what she says seems to explain her skills as her being able to do something as long as she can visualize it in her mind. Again, according to what she says.
Her main declared goal in the afterlife is to take down God. In order to become satisfied, though, her goal is to see everyone she cares about safe and happy which means it will be impossible for her to move on until their entire group has too. Since she doesn't quite realize this is what will satisfy her and she doesn't want to be reincarnated yet, she focuses on bringing God down a couple of notches. The more obvious it becomes that they're nowhere near close to finding God (Naoi's attempts to claim he is aside) the more serious Yuri appears to get, sometimes staying verbally quiet and processing information in her mind over and over again to try to figure out what's going on. Which means to say, she may be fairly spontaneous in appearances, but she really analyzes and plans things when it comes to what she cares about. That includes trying to find ways for everyone to not get incapacitated during missions and getting closer to finding God.
When it actually comes down to the situation where she is able to not only override the present God but become God herself is when Yuri shows her true colors, though. Instead of seeking revenge on God she realizes that what she really needed was to just be able to protect and love the people she was with. She destroyed what had been acting as "God" in the system, just like she had said, and was able to be satisfied simply by learning to let herself love again and successfully protect it this time until the very end.
So overall, Yuri's definitely not the kind of girl who sits down and takes things-- unless it's taking charge. She leads the way on all kinds of crazy things, does and takes what she wants, leaves no prisoners, and does it all with one hell of a heart.
Other:
✯She has very good calligraphy skills. She excels at archery. She knows twin-blade sword style. She can aim a gun and get someone right in between the eyes. She somehow knows how to make a propulsion device to fire people into the ceiling. She obviously had a lot of time on her hands before she met Hinata and the rest of the crew, so she was probably there for a long time.
✯There's an OVA episode called Angel Beats! Stairway to Heaven that's complete crack in which Yurippe orders everyone to do everything with "high tension." Chugging drunks, yelling while they talk, doing everything at 500%! It's absolutely ridiculous, but Yurippe claims that it'll confuse Angel and she'll be forced to contact God for help. Obviously, not all of Yurippe's ideas are brilliant. It fails, obviously, and Yurippe forces everyone but her to fast for a week. No food or water. It's not like they can die anyway. The episode ends with her assistant saying "You really do make the best villain, Yurippe." It's never specified when this occurs, but it's a good example of how she sometimes terrorizes the rest of the SSS members for her own entertainment.

Oh, I should probably include an actual useful link. Here's the Angel Beats! Wiki page on her.
First Person (entry type): I found a wallet on the ground today. I think the school's trying to trick me into doing the normal thing and returning it to the lost and found or find the principal. There aren't any meal tickets in it even though, talk about a way to piss me off! It's completely useless!
...What did happen to the principal though? I told those guys to give him a seat in the SSS so that we could use the office for the Anti-Angel Headquarters, but I haven't seen him since. Those idiots can't have done anything too stupid though, since Angel never came after us for it so I guess it's nothing to worry about.
The wallet reminds me that we are running pretty low on meal tickets though. Maybe it's time for another Operation Tornado? Or should I go with Operation Monster Stream? Fish or more udon? I don't really feel like going fishing though, so that's out...
I'm starting to think they really need to get more variety in the meal ticket options. Oh, wait! I'll just order everyone to have a cook-off! They can go invade the home ec classes and borrow all of their supplies without permission, then have a cooking contest on the baseball field! What should I call it? Operation Emeril? Operation Udon-Strike? Operation Kitchen... Operation Strike Kitchen Nightmare! Guess now I've just got to figure out how to distract Angel and what to do if the plan fails~
Third Person: Crawling in the ventilation of a building to avoid getting caught by all these traps was a really, really good idea. Sure, it'd be small and cramped, and she'd probably have to kill Hinata for looking up her skirt or grabbing something on accident, but it'd be a much easier way to get past all the damn traps.
Except there wasn't any ventilation in a giant underground cavern, so that idea didn't really help at all, and she still ended up having to kick Hinata off a cliff because hedid something embarrassing was being an annoying moron. It was definitely no fun whenever Angel found the Guild's location and they ended up having to move, especially since the job fell to Yurippe to lead the above-ground members of the SSS down to beat Angel to the Guild and get them to move before Angel caught them making weapons and thoroughly killed everyone down there.
Yurippe was pretty bad about occasionally incapacitating Hinata or others when she got annoyed, but when it came down to Operations that she planned, it was a pretty big hit. She looked at the remainder of the group quietly for a few seconds. Only four people left and they still had a ways to go. Tons of traps and possibly running into Angel-- they hadn't run into her yet though, so did she take the wrong route? Or was she already there? No, they'd be able to hear the gunfire going on further down the cavern if Angel had made it there. They were awaiting Yuri's orders and trusting her to get down there to spell them out.
Better not disappoint then. She ran ahead of the rest of the group now, turning around and pointing at them with an enthusiasm that didn't reflect her regrets at not being able to safely get the rest there, even if they'd be okay as soon as they got the traps disabled.
"What's the matter with you three!? We've still got a ways to go and you're slacking! Hurry up or there'll be a punishment game when we get back for whoever fall behind!"
The other three promptly became very tense and started actually running to catch up with her. She started running too, staying ahead of them and laughing while she stayed ahead of them. You know, until Shiina went all ninja on her and was suddenly twenty feet in front of her. Yuri grinned after a second, then pumped her fist up in the air.
"That's the spirit!"

Character: Yuri "Yurippe" Nakamura
Fandom: Angel Beats!
Another member in Yurippe's

Except there wasn't any ventilation in a giant underground cavern, so that idea didn't really help at all, and she still ended up having to kick Hinata off a cliff because he
Yurippe was pretty bad about occasionally incapacitating Hinata or others when she got annoyed, but when it came down to Operations that she planned, it was a pretty big hit.
